"During the Covid pandemic," Carl Jack recalls, "I spent a lot of time as an infectious diseases physician providing care and doing research to find answers for this terrible affliction on humanity. I also wrote a number of new songs and produced an online music series entitled 'Quarantunes' featuring health care workers performing for the community during 2020 and 2021. This album came at the end of pandemic as a celebration of life. It is a collection of songs and stories that span the pandemic and the many years that I’ve been writing. Making The Road Less Taken album was a way to help me heal and I hope it will provide some joy to others."
A songwriter, musician, and MD based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Carl Jack was greatly influenced by the folk music revival of the 1960s,growing up listening to his parents’ recordings of Martha Schlamm, Leadbelly, Paul Robeson, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, and Peter, Paul & Mary. His musical career has spanned more than 40 years with the songs on The Road Less Taken written as far back as 1979. Carl exhibits a lifelong commitment to composing and playing despite a demanding medical career. "To me, love, humor, social activism and change are all intertwined," Carl says. "Because of this, I choose to write a variety of songs that are heartfelt, make you think, and challenge paradigms."
His involvement in movements for social change, often performing on picket lines and rallies has shaped much of his singing and songwriting. One example of this was the inaugural Worker’s Memorial Day Celebration, April 28, 1988, where he performed his original song, “Tell Me Their Names,” written for the dedication of the memorial to 28 workers who were killed at L’Ambiance Plaza in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Over the years, he has performed with Joe Jencks, Charlie King, John McCutcheon, Rebel Voices, Cathy Fink, Anne Feeney, Jon Fromer, and Tom Juravich. Carl Jack is known for his songs and stories of love, labor and laughter, and life crafted for all ages. He is also a physician who recognizes the importance of art, music, and laughter in the healing process. He released his first album, The Warmth of A Thousand Suns, in 2020.
