About Born in the '90s:
July 2019, I found a box in a closet at my moms house with a cassette dated 1996. I played it and was dumbfounded to find it was songs I had recorded in 1996, forgot about and never released! This is an album of those actual recordings. I had them digitized and mastered by Steve Turnidge in Seattle.
Produced by: Mark Hatchfield
Recorded at Live Wire Studios in Sacramento, California in 1996
Released September 15, 2019

Credits:
Doug Fergus: bass, lead vocal.
Tom Wooten: bass, guitar
Greg Scarborough: lead vocal, back up vocal, keys.
John Gonzales: drums
Joe Diehl: guitar
Paul Ezekiel: drums

1. LOOKING OUT FOR NO. 1 (04:08)
This is a cover of a Bachman-Turner Overdrive song. I rearranged it, changed the rhythm and added an original musical section at the end.
It was recorded in 1996 in Sacramento, CA.

2. PATRICK (INTRODUCE YOURSELF) (04:22)
I wrote this about a real person that I went through Air Force basic training with.
He was a 'idiot savant', an electronics genius, but was socially awkward and couldn't do many of the mundane things like make his bed properly, shine his shoes, keep his things neat, march in a straight line, etc. We were told to just be patient with him and help him.

3. PEOPLE IN THE BACK ROW (03:06)
I wrote this because I used to be VERY shy and I actually preferred to NOT be noticed. I would sit in the way back in classrooms and never raise my hand. It's a tribute to all the shy people like I used to be!

4. IF YOU DON'T DO IT (03:32)
I wrote this about my music business pursuits and the old saying: If you don't do it, someone else will-!
It was the first song I recorded after moving to Ashland, Oregon in 1998. I went into a studio and said I wanted to record a song. The guy called two of his buddies, a drummer and a guitarist. One hour later they had learned it and we had finished recording my song that you hear here. I'm the bass player. Pretty cool bass, eh? ;-)

5. Roll Him Over
I wrote this about my experience in the Air Force stationed near Fairbanks, Alaska. It was sad to witness many of my fellow airmen fall into alcoholism, typically due to boredom. Also many of the local native Alaskans living in Fairbanks were severe alcoholics.
It was common to see the airmen in the dormitories passed out, drunk, having puked all over. One day the base commander issued a statement, to look out for our fellow airmen and if you see someone passed out, face down, roll him over and check to be sure he's still breathing. Really! Istead of trying to stop the alcoholism... that was his solution.

6. WHAT AM I DOING HERE ANY WAY (03:02)
I originally wrote this about my 4 years playing in a band in the Los Angeles area, working the club scene and trying to 'make it'.
We eventually got a record deal with Allied Artists Records, but nothing came of it.
It was a grind: I worked a 40 hour/week day job in a sheet metal shop, rehearsed and gigged with the band 5 nights a week endlessly, on repeat for four years. Finally, after the record company stopped answering our phone calls and me getting frustrated with the formulaic pop the guitarists/songwriter was writing. I quit. Freedom to pursue my own music goals!

7. ROCKIN' COUCH POTATO (03:13)
I wrote this about the lovable Couch Potato. I had to really think about it, because I am definitely NOT a couch potato!
There are two versions of this song, one is titled simply Couch Potato. It's slower with more emphasis on humor. You will find it on my Air Play Direct release, THESE ARE SINGLES: http://airplaydirect.com/LuckyDougFergusTheseAreSingles

Rockin' Couch Potato is the same song, but recorded with a rocking band and faster tempo.

8. LOVE LIKE A GIGOLO (04:07)
I wrote this about an older woman I dated. I was 24, she was 33. She was a nurse and had a 'secret life' dating me, a lowly 24 year old with no career job yet. She was dating other men with varying economic advantages. I think I was the one with the least amount of money.. I guess I was good at something else? Ha! She got tired of me and moved on.. It sure was fun while it lasted!

9. HOUSE OF FEAR (02:51)
This was a song I wrote about a friend who had lived in a bad situation while growing up. His father was a drunk and was often mean. It's a much different song than most of my other upbeat, fun songs.
My friend acutally sang the lead on it. It turned out so well that I had to include it on this album.

LUCKY DOUG FERGUS BIOGRAPHY
In addition to being a bassist, vocalist, lyricist, songwriter, comedian and good cook, Doug is an accomplished tambourine sharpener.

He has been inspired by some of his favorite comedians and musicians: Jonathan Winters, George Carlin, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, the Talking Heads, Devo, Weird Al Yankovic, Warren Zevon, Primus and Frank Zappa.

Doug began his music career in 1982 with the Los Angeles band, Split Image and was signed to Allied Artists Records.

His songs with his bands Naked in Public, Lucky Doug and the Stinkbugs and Lucky Doug Fergus can be found on nearly all digital platforms including Pandora, iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music and have been played on Sirius XM and hundreds of college radio stations across Canada and the US.

Doug loves puppy dogs, bubble baths, and long candle lit walks on the beach. He believes his role in life is to share his joy for living and his “If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade” outlook. Oh, and he’d like to thank Gosh.

From Jake at Roctober Magazine:
“Odd quirk-rock truth telling through poppy songs that sound like weirdo novelty rock but are really life lessons that are actually funnier than real novelty rock.”
