Deep in the red dirt country hills of Oklahoma, Elexa Dawson and Stanley Hotel built a spaceship and called that brilliant collaboration Wanderlust. Described as “a soul-stirring journey through earth and sky,” Wanderlust contains songs that beckon the listener to sojourn through passages formerly unexplored. From the first song’s expedition to the outer limits of the human experience to the last guided meditation, delivering a message from the ancestors, this album is an epic quest worthy of your best traveling shoes. Each song is a stop on the tour, gathering sweet sentiments of loneliness, love, connection, and completion. Dance with the transient and the lovers with “Rainbows” in their eyes and get “High on the Street.” With such a “Lot of Life” to live, sit out at night and gaze at the southwestern sky, listening to what the “Lonely Coyote” has to say. Go down where the honeysuckle grows with the “Sweet Sisters,” where “Mother Earth” invites us to stay a little while. The

Elexa relocated to Kansas almost twenty years ago but happily traveled back “home” to the Oklahoma red dirt that raised her to record at Remote Records, a wonderfully weird compound in the country that Adam Stanley, Isaac Nelson, and Doug Swindell of Stanley Hotel call their acoustic playground. With mutual admiration at the core of their sonic choices, Stanley Hotel’s earthy soundscape perfectly supports Elexa’s vocal prowess. With both parties contributing canny compositions, the album stays cohesive through the steady invocation of nature’s spirits, playing with the ether but always returning to the dirt.

Wanderlust is Elexa’s sophomore release. Her debut, Music is Medicine was released in 2019, while Stanley Hotel’s catalog demonstrates their proclivity for production. Releases such as Samson Mammoth and The Wolf Told Me first attracted Elexa to their multi-genre style and eclectic musicality. She then contributed background vocals to The Moose. Additional recording projects such as Doug Swindell’s solo releases, Magna Contra, and Repairman Noize leave no doubt that these Okie indie rockers have pursued perfection in the art of a song.
