Biography
The Cherry Boppers start their musical journey in early 2004 with a collective enthusiasm and fascination for the origins of the Jazz-Funk scene of the late 60’s and early 70’s.
In July 2006 they release their first album “Dressin’ the Puppet’ with Bilbao label “Noizpop”. The album itself is 100% pure funk with a groove so smooth that dancing is inevitable. It also pays homage, through interpretations and cover versions, to the late great maestros of this generation, Lou Donaldson, Reuben Wilson, Lonnie Smith, Maceo Parker, Grant Green and James Brown but also adding some original compositions.
A new year, a new recording and after touring all over Spain, they go into the studio at the beginning of 2007 to record what will be their first 7” single, “Black Lolita” with “Watermelon Man” on side B. This version of the Herbie Hancock’s classic is considered to be one of the toughest that has never been made, being the introductory tune for the sports programme on National Radio 1. For this occasion, they recruit Mihail Goldfingers who replaced previous saxophonist, Bob Philips Rivas. This classic 7” vinyl recording captures the pure raw energy that they deliver time and again throughout their live performances. The single is released by Enlace Funk.
Also in 2007 they win the music contest “Villa de Bilbao” under the Best Live Show category; they travel to Munich to take part of the Theatron Festival in the city’s famous Olympic Park.
But the most important moment of 2007 is their participation in the San Sebastian Jazz Festival, one of the most prestigious Jazz Festivals in Europe; here, they open for Sly and The Family Stone, a difficult task that they resolved successfully, taking all the attention from the media. The show was broadcasted on national TV as part of the “Summer Concerts” series.
“Play It Again!” will be the title of their second album, to be released in Autumn 2008 where they have the star collaboration of guitarist Javier Vargas (Vargas Blues Band) and vice versa…because The Cherry Boppers will appear along with Devon Allman, Raimundo Amador and Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush) as collaborators on “Flamenco Blues Experience”, Vargas latest project, available in stores now.
This new album has been recorded using a Studer at Garate Studios (Andoain, Guipuzcoa) with engineer Kaki Arkarazo (Amparanoia, Parafünk, Celtas Cortos, Loquillo…) produced by Fernando Pardo (Sex Museum, Los Coronas) and The Cherry Boppers. You will find original compositions that are easy to dance to and are based on the solid, dirty and crude groove of the rhythm section. The hypnotic harmonies and groove of the guitar combined with the Leslified Hammond are a big part of the band´s sound. Everything sits in place when the sound of Mihail Goldfingers' sax brings us back to the sound of film scores from the 70's (Blaxplotation, Starscky Hutch…) or takes us to an expressionist and abstract trance through his solos.
This year is full of adventures for The Cherry Boppers so stay tuned for surprises and they won’t disappoint you!!
