“A lonesome wail as the sun sets low
And the blues come down like rain”
Sunny Lowdown plays the raw, deep blues, drawing from the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Jesse Mae Hemphill and R.L. Burnside. New York’s Village Voice once described Sunny’s music as “swamp music”, but Sunny shuns labels. “I’m just me,” he says. “Sunny Lowdown.” The blues sound took hold of Sunny at an early age. He was only sixteen when he first backed up the great John Lee Hooker. He then went on to work with many of his favorite blues musicians: Howlin’ Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin, Muddy Waters pianist Pinetop Perkins, Chicago blues legends Otis Rush and George “Wild Child” Butler, Fat Possum recording artists R.L. Burnside and Cedell Davis, and many others. Over the years Sunny has shared bills with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Gregg Allman and other top artists.
Sunny Lowdown’s latest release, “The Blues Volume Low”, has been critically acclaimed and was named 2014 Blues Album Of The Year by Spokane Public Radio. “I love this music and I like to keep it raw" says Sunny. "I may cook it up a little, but I never overcook it."
