Biography
A performing songwriter and producer whose fans have compared him to Ray Davies, Paul’s current creative venture is 3 in 1, a year-long project of songs being released three at a time throughout 2015. Previous releases Chasing the Moon, Light @the EOL and Dancin’ Room can be previewed on his CD Baby artist page and at www.paulguzzone.com.
Paul calls himself an “electronic troubadour” writing solidly structured songs in the pop and acoustic tradition and turning them into highly polished recordings that are occasionally layered with electronic elements.
Chasing the Moon was praised by Pete Feenstra on the website Get Ready to Rock (UK) as full of “… sonic textures, wry narratives, catchy hooks and songs that draw you in. Chasing the Moon is an unlikely but successful meeting of a singer-songwriter with one foot in roots rock and the other in electronic production ...”
A musician since childhood whose first band Revival was signed to Buddha Records fresh out of high school, Paul made his first serious foray into songwriting with the band Little Criminals. Their sound was an amalgam of Paul’s hook-laden pop-rock and keyboard player David Lulow’s bluesy jazz-inflected funk. Their tours won them loyal fans throughout the North- and Southeast.
Paul’s solo debut, the vinyl EP Dancin’ Room took his pop to a new, danceable level and vied with Billy Joel for a place on East Coast radio playlists. It also garnered positive reviews like this one in Stereo Review: “Paul Guzzone’s Dancin’ Room is rousing, unpretentious bar-band boogie … good-time, unselfconscious rock-n-roll …”
Subsequent tours backing renowned folk artists Tom Chapin and Tom Rush put Paul on the “Folk City 25th Anniversary Concert” album and Tom Rush’s “Late Night Radio” and “Live at Symphony Hall.”
Then a new creative focus was added as Paul began writing and producing music for commercials and corporate events, winning a few awards in the process and becoming a go-to name in the industry. His pop and rock sensibility served him well as he delivered “industrials” that sounded like new hit songs.
Meanwhile, Paul got a call from songwriter and film composer friend Michael Bacon. “My brother and I are starting a band,” he said, “and you’re the bass player.” The phone call began a 20-year relationship with Michael and sibling Kevin, the film and TV actor whose second career as a musician and songwriter is now well known. Paul became not only bass player and vocalist in their band but occasionally producer, songwriting partner and music director as well.
In addition to the Bacon Brothers and his own releases, Paul’s production credits include: Aztec Two-Step’s Cause & Effect, the 40th anniversary collection of socially relevant songs by this respected acoustic duo, and Days of Horses, their highly-praised 2004 CD; the jazz and cabaret bassist/songwriter Ritt Henn; the jazzy duo Too Human; the eclectic singer-songwriter Mary Ellen Bernard; and other independent artists. Paul also engineered the recording of Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and other major stars for The New York Times bestselling book & platinum-selling CD Philadelphia Chickens by author/ illustrator Sandra Boynton.
Paul continues to write and release songs on his own and with a variety of co-writers while remaining active as a producer and as a member of the Bacon Brothers band. Current covers include “I Will Carry You” which placed in the Top 25 on the Billboard Dance Club Charts (recorded by Shara Strand and written with Mike Greenly); “Not Gonna Miss You” recorded by Shara Strand and written with Mike Greenly and the artist; “Give You My Love” recorded by acoustic blues artist Ruthie Foster and written with the artist; and “493 Miles” recorded by the Bacon Brothers and written with Kevin Bacon and the Bacon Brothers band. Another one of Paul’s co-writes with Mike Greenly “Everything Happens For A Reason” will be released in Italian and English by the AC pop-rock tenor Micheal Castaldo in Spring of 2015.
