Aussie Songwriter/Blues-Roots/Guitarist Geoff Achison is well respected by many music fans, a reputation forged through decades of making consistently excellent music. Achison first struck gold in the USA by winning the Albert King Award at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 1995, and has maintained an impressive touring schedule on multiple continents since then.

Achison is on the trail once again in support of his new album Sovereign Town, an acoustic, intimate and decidedly song-driven collection of 12 tracks, inspired by the early days of Australia’s gold rush of 1850 in the state of Victoria. It was recorded in the historic mining town of Ballarat, Victoria. The album examines the imperative of leaving home to seek one’s fortune, love and destiny, while also considering that ‘digging for gold’ has a downside and a cost.

Geoff on how the idea came together:

“Growing up in Malmsbury in the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Victoria’s goldfields, we had dozens of dull, grey mullock heaps all around us, remnants of the old diggings. We kids would explore the discarded mine-shafts and tunnels, daring each other to leap over huge holes in the ground. It was fascinating history, so much work that had been suddenly abandoned. This inspired the song “Sovereign Town”, the first track written for the new album.
As writing progressed, I began listening not only to the whispers of my own past but to the ghosts haunting the history of the area. It morphed into this story about what it might have been like out in the goldfields back in the day, more of a story about the people who dug those holes and tunnels I saw as a kid. These stories were written with a small combo in mind. I specifically wanted upright bass & drums with Hammond organ to accompany my acoustic guitar & voice.”

Eleven tracks are originals written by Geoff, with one cover – Ben Harper’s “Walk Away.” The Sovereign Town tour will see him playing both solo and band shows in the USA in September and October. The official release is set for September 7th, distributed worldwide through Landslide Records USA.
