There's Another Baby Waiting For Me (02:21)

A fun song from the legendary Don Reno & Red Smiley. Nick and Derek have a tight vocal duet and all the instrumental breaks feature twin solos: mandolin with fiddle, guitar with banjo.

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Nick Dauphinais-guitar, vocal
Derek Vaden-banjo, vocal
John Duncan-fiddle
Celia Millington-Wyckoff-bass

Grey Eagle (03:03)

This is a Western North Carolina specific version of Grey Eagle, not the contest tune many fiddlers are familiar with. JD Harris, Marcus Martin, Manco Sneed and other fiddlers from the Blue Ridge mountains all had versions of this tune and I'm pleased to have my own version now with the talented Rob Fong. I once saw Rob win a fiddle contest with his rendition of Grey Eagle, and we try to recreate that here.

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Rob Fong-fiddle
Nick Dauphinais-guitar
Derek Vaden-banjo
Celia Millington-Wyckoff -bass

Wild Hog in the Woods (03:46)

An old square dance tune from fidder Luke Decker. This tune has gotten very popular in the contemporary old-time scene and Tatiana Hargreaves has an epic version here on this recording.

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Tatiana Hargreaves-fiddle
Nick Dauphinais-guitar
Derek Vaden-banjo
Celia Millington-Wyckoff -bass

Kentucky Mandolin (02:56)

A classic Bill Monroe mandolin instrumental with great fiddling from Lindsay Pruett!

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Lindsay Pruett-fiddle
Nick Dauphinais-guitar
Derek Vaden-banjo
Celia Millington-Wyckoff-bass

Wild Horse (02:21)

Inspired by the fiddling of Clark Kessinger. It features the talented Asheville fiddler Rob Fong. Some bluegrass pickers may hear strains of "Stony Point"

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Rob Fong-fiddle
Nick Dauphinais-guitar
Derek Vaden-banjo
Celia Millington-Wyckoff-bass

Curtains of Night (03:34)

I learned this waltz from a cassette tape of Otis Burris & Fortune. He sings it as a lovely duet with old-time icon Alice Gerrard. I hope listeners might try to dance a little when they hear this one.

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Celia Millington-Wyckoff -bass, vocals
Nick Dauphinais-guitar, vocals
Tatiana Hargreaves-fiddle
Derek Vaden-banjo

Durang's Hornpipe (03:16)

John Duncan learned this tune from the Stuart Brothers and brought it to the band. It's a straight-forward fiddle tune, likely to induce dancing. This is fitting as it pays tribute to early American dancer John Durang, who was famous for dancing the hornpipe.

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
John Duncan-fiddle
Nick Dauphinais-guitar
Derek Vaden-banjo
Celia Millington-Wyckoff-bass

You'll Find Her Name Written There (03:47)

Nick Dauphinais sings a great rendition of this Bill Monroe song with epic twin fiddles from Lindsay Pruett and Tatiana Hargreaves

Daniel Ullom-mandolin
Tatiana Hargreaves-fiddle
Lindsay Pruett-fiddle
Nick Dauphinais-guitar, vocal
Derek Vaden-banjo
Celia Millington-Wyckoff-bass

As a mandolin player, not knowing the difference between old-time and bluegrass camps can mean a lonely time. If you get fired up by an old-time tune and transcend the melody for a few bars, you’re likely to watch the pickers slowly walk off without a word. Or if you decide to jump on a melody with bluegrass picker, they might think you’re stealing their thunder and push you off stage. This album celebrates the music where these two camps meet and showcases how I think the mandolin fits into it all.

Thanks to Wes & Will Wienman, Wayne Millington, Drew Matulich & the Bywater crew, the Dryman Mountain Development, Asheville Potluck, Geoff & Nancy, and Dennis Peterson. Special thanks to my parents & siblings, who endured countless hours of fiddle tunes. Extra special thanks to Emma Rast for her constant inspiration.
