NADAKA
Biography
In Sanskrit, “ Nada” is the origin of sound and “ Ka” is the one who carries it within.
Born in Quebec in 1958, Nadaka lives in India since 1974.
Music it seems was always a part of his life, first in Quebec then else where, as he leaves his native land at the age of 16 to “travel the world”, spending time in Morocco, Iran and Afghanistan before finally reaching India where he settles permanently. Dedicated to the ideals of India's great revolutionary yogi, Sri Aurobindo, he lives in the international settlement of Auroville, in South India.
An early pioneer on the eroded landscape of Auroville, he participates actively in the ecological and material development of this utopian city in the making. Throughout the years he also wanders through cities, temples and mythical places of the Tamil country which he perceives as his own and sees from so many perspectives.
His love of Indian culture and passion for Indian music led him to study a number of traditional music styles, both on Indian stringed instruments and vocally. He has designed and built an acoustic guitar with scalloped neck and mobible frets which is specially adapted for the subtle tones of Indian music. Skillfully blending the modal techniques of Ragas with chords and harmonies more akin to Western music, he has developed his unique style. Nadaka has recorded and produced many albums that have been widly distributed in India and around the world. Working in close collaboration with many famous and outstanding Indian musicians, Nadaka has played an active part in the contemporary movement of Indian music.
Traditional ragas, sacred chants, electric passages that come togther in a performance that seeks to open a window on the traditions of India with a contemporary approach, making us feel closer to this mysterious country and it’s sense of the infinite.
