A former journalist at The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, Fulton began her songwriting career just a few years ago with “Not Going Back”, which won the national Renaissance Artists and Writers Association’s annual Songs for Social Change contest. Encouraged by this response, in 2021 Mary Lou released her debut album, We'll Tell Stories, a collection of personal and political songs shaped by her life as a storyteller, daughter of a Mexican immigrant, and a social justice advocate. The album reached the Top 15 on the FAI folk chart and earned glowing reviews from Alt-Root, Americana Highways, and others.
Now she’s back with a song that speaks out for the majority of Americans who want women to have reproductive freedom. The song arrives at a crucial moment when 13 states are pushing to have abortion rights on their November ballots. “Someday, someone you love may need an abortion,” Fulton said. “Let’s stand up for them and their freedom to make this deeply personal decision that belongs in the hands of women, not the government.”
