Paul Liberatore Marin Independent Journal
The centerpiece of this remarkable recording is the title track, one of the anthems of the peace and love generation. Levinger gives the Youngbloods’ 1967 hit a new string band sound, playing five-string tenor guitar and a 1938 Washburn Solotone Deluxe guitar. Mandolin master David Grisman chimes into the mix on a Giacomel prototype “Dawg Model” mandolin and Jesse Colin Young, the Youngbloods’ former frontman and lead singer, adds a high harmony vocal above Levinger’s sturdy baritone.
This meticulously produced album was recorded at Young’s Owl Mountain Studio in Inverness, one of the few buildings that survived the Mount Vision Fire in 1995.
The handsome album packaging includes a 19-page color booklet with Levinger’s comments on each song.
Young’s poignant presence makes this special album even more special. It’s a must-have for anyone interested in the living history of Marin music.
