Biography
The first thing you notice is April Nicholle's voice, pure and strong, riding a high melody or harmony. Then comes Mark Kane's voice, warm and a little rough at the edges. The harmonies kick in and the full sound hits, the two voices pushing and complementing each other. Underneath, April's six-string acoustic guitar drives the rhythm or weaves delicate finger-picking patterns. Mark's 12-string adds gypsy or bluesy leads to the mix. This is the essential sound of the musical duo, Cain and April.

But the greatest strength of the duo is in the songwriting. From Folk to Rock to Country, Americana and Celtic, the lyrics are crafted to the music by two veterans of prestigious creative writing programs, April at North Texas University, Mark at the University of Denver. Cain and April take words very seriously.

Born in western Kansas, April Nicholle studied ballet and danced professionally around the world. One grandfather was a renowned Bach organist. A grandmother was an opera singer. April began writing songs as a teenager. Her career as a singer began even earlier. Singing became her focus while she lived in Texas, where she performed often in Denton, Dallas, and Fort Worth. She took up the study of poetry to develop her songwriting. Always fascinated by Europe, France in particular, she taught English in France for a year.

Mark Kane grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Besides doing farm work, he learned to play guitar, sang at school and in church, and read widely, waiting to see the world. Once in college he began to explore the US, Europe, and, eventually, China, where he taught English for a year. One particularly important journey was to Greece and Turkey with his friend the poet Nicholas Samaras. Mark never stopped writing, playing, and singing music.

Mark and April formed the duo in April of 2008, after playing together for short sets at Cricket on the Hill and the Lion's Lair in Denver. The first rehearsal lasted for hours, running through dozens of songs, both originals and covers. The interaction of voices and guitars was striking from the first.

Their travels, their experiences, and the wide skies of the high plains of America all find their way into the music and lyrics of Cain and April. Listen now.
