Once again produced by Jono Manson and released on Berkalin Records, New Old Friends is C. Daniel’s Boling's ninth solo album. Daniel and legendary folk songwriter and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton (who calls Daniel "New Mexico's songwriting savant") co-wrote all 15 songs on the album. Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary also co-wrote one song with Daniel and Tom. Tom sings on five of the tracks. These songs cover quite a range of topics and tempos, and showcase the skill of these two very well-seasoned songwriters plus some tasty instrumental chops from banjo virtuoso Jeff Scroggins, much sought-after piano sideman Jason Crosby, and several other very talented friends.
"Tom Paxton and I met a few times over the past 20 years at Folk Alliance International events and festivals we played, but we really connected during the summer of 2022 at a masterful songwriters retreat Tom led in Colorado," recalls Boling. "We started writing songs together soon after that and discovered a great deal in common in how we see the world and write about it, despite our 20-year age difference. Our pile of new songs grew, and I told Tom I planned to include several on my next solo CD. To my delight, he suggested I consider making a whole album of our co-writes … so here is New Old Friends. When I asked if he would be willing to sing on the album, typical of his generous spirit and self-deprecating humor Tom replied, 'I’ll sing if, when, and wherever you think I’ll do the least damage.' Classic Tom Paxton!"
Winner of the Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk songwriter contest, the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival songwriter contest, and others, Daniel shares experiences from a life well-lived in three countries and seven States. This balladeer/songwriter with the friendly tenor brings his well-crafted story songs to happy audiences throughout the U.S. and in Europe, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia from house concerts and listening rooms to major festivals – Kerrville, Winfield, Woody Guthrie, and others. Daniel is also a member of the iconic 1960s folk trio The Limeliters often touring together with The Brothers Four and The Kingston Trio. Daniel’s 2016 album, These Houses, was also chosen among Top 10 Albums of the year by Folk Radio DJs across North America, as was his 2014 album Sleeping Dog.
"I sent these 15 tracks to Tom when the studio work was done," Daniel says, "and he wrote back, 'Wonderful album, Son. Let’s do another.'
"And we just might!"
