Two visionaries, firmly rooted, write songs that reflect generations of farmers, miners, and homesteaders. In this 2023 album, one finds reflections that hearken back beyond the collective childhoods of the writers to the lives and thoughts of their ancestors. “Oh, the things the north wind has told me!” (Planting Seed) These songs honor those who are often underappreciated, but whose presence enriches their environment.
These seasoned recording artists have been making music together since the 1980s, and their music never sounded so timeless and wise. Through one of the miracles of technology, these songs were co-written through Zoom meetings and recorded in dual studios in the hills of Delaware and Upstate, NY.
Marc Moss, the producer from the Red Hook, NY studio that minted this gem, writes powerful songs and masterfully plays pretty much every instrument under the sun here, including all manner of Martin acoustics, Rickenbacker electrics, drums, bass, keyboards, and mandolin. Marc understands how to arrange songs and infuse them with sweet harmonies and groovy instrumental balance.
Dave Meredith, Delaware-based honey-voiced lead tenor, and harmonizer on the bulk of these tunes, cowrites most of the songs and brings a musical sensibility that reminds of Nick Drake, Natalie Merchant, Richard Thompson, and George Harrison.
Songs such as Running Out of Road, Under The Radar, Cinnamon Mare, and Catskill Morning Light are catchy and hummable, powered by rhythm, bass, and electric instruments. She Built Us A Home hearkens back to some of this pair’s earlier songs and sound. The Wind Won’t Stop is a slide-powered old acoustic blues piece that would be at home on a Charley Patton album.
Under the Radar is about the refugee crisis, how it touches our world, and how stressful it can be to live undocumented.
Forgotten Man is a gentle reflection of those who are not necessarily represented in politics or popular culture “the work that’s driving the machine keeps the dirty masses clean.” (Forgotten Man)
She Built Us A Home was written to honor Marc and Dave’s wives, Ency and Rhonda, for the love that they put into their respective lives and how these relationships have been positive, nurturing ones for them.
One and Only has that intimate sound of a great Nick Lowe ballad with lyrics that are pure and faithful in their message. It is difficult to listen to this song without replaying it.
Taste of Honey is an arrow to the heart—a sweet Song of Songs love song that combines a lovely, warm Cat Stevens acoustic landscape with poetic, intimate words written like a sublime Valentine.
Don’t Let Your Dreams Go to Waste is a prayer for creativity that reminds me of some conversations Dave and I have had through the years, and it seems to be specifically written with the next generation in mind. Spine-tingling harmonies, minor key bravado, a Spanish guitar solo, mandolin, and bass make this a special song musically, too.
Cinnamon Mare. is a true story about Marc’s wife, Ency Austin, and how she spent her summers riding her horse among apple orchards, hills, and winding creeks.
Osiris is a psychedelic mountain song that combines a bit of a Raga feel with something that The Band might have sung together. It is a reminder that fires that destroy also lead to regrowth and rebirth.
She Lives On “I was too proud to forgive her and relieve her pain...She lives on in every song I write.” Is a gentle closing ballad that speaks of loss and how it continues to inspire the act of writing songs. The ending of the song is a bookend, hearkening back to the first line of the song, “not long ago, the road rose to my feet,” which may remind the listener of the Irish blessing, “May the road rise to meet you…” Ultimately the song and the album are reminders not only of the past, but of the passage of time and the desire to make peace with memories and look to the future where life, creativity, and future generations will continue and artists will make art.
