JUST OVER THE RIDGE
Radio Release Date: February 1, 2021

Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears revel in the endless groove of Appalachian fiddle/banjo duets, funky blues bass lines, and soulful harmony singing. The Colorado based duo draws from a deep history of listening to and learning from great American music of the past. With a wealth of combined experience as life-long musicians and dedicated songwriters, the duo is excited to present their EP Just Over The Ridge. The project is a six track compilation of original songs that features the versatile playing of Lizzy and Natalie as they soar on the wings of American musical tradition and pull people into their colorful landscape.

The first track of Just Over the Ridge, "Seasons Change," welcomes listeners into the Rocky Mountains with melodic banjo lines and soaring fiddle solos. Inspired by their time on stage at the John Hartford Memorial festival, the duo offers a few humorous nods to Hartford in the second and third tracks: "Sweet Song In The Tall Grass" and "Blind Love Blues." Lizzy and Natalie merge syncopation, groove, and an old-time hook with the instrumental "Through the Window." "Tennessee" features the duo’s softer side with soulful harmony singing and a deep bed of piano. Colorado roots guitarist Courtney Hartman (Della Mae, Taylor Ashton, Robert Ellis Jr.) adds depth as a guest artist on "Blind Love Blues" and "Carry Me With You," a love song with a happy dream-like tune that leaves the audience suspended in lush layers of harmony.

For four years, Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears have been chasing the music that lies Just Over The Ridge. After many miles and much demand from audiences, they have crafted a recording that traces the contour of their musical journey together. In 2012, Lizzy co-founded the Gunnison Valley folk trio Free the Honey. The band performed nationwide, releasing three records, culminating with the album Fine Bloom which reached #1 on the Folk DJ charts. The two young women had a fortuitous chance meeting in 2014, with Natalie joining Free the Honey on bass for a year before the group disbanded in 2016. Natalie then co-founded Carbondale's string and groove trio,Pearl and Wood, and performed with them until 2018. Lizzy went on to release her first solo project We Will Sing in 2019, playing for audiences nationwide from Alabama to Portland. Joining forces after Free the Honey disbanded, Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears combined their love for traditional banjo/fiddle music and their mountain-inspired songwriting to create a duo project that took flight delighting audiences across the country. They appeared on the stages of the John Hartford Memorial Festival, Jammin’ at Hippie Jacks, Swallow Hill, Ozark Mountain Folk Center, and the Jalopy Theatre.
