Biography
Whether you experience Graham Johnson for the first time in person, through a recording, or in a music video, it doesn't take long to realize that you are being introduced to someone unique and intriguing, and definitely special. This tall, strikingly handsome young dude exudes warmth and appeal, which comes through loud and clear with just his voice and a guitar.
Graham grew up on the outskirts of Los Angeles in Newbury Park, California, a region that identifies with country culture surprisingly well. It's somewhat of a paradox to see a Californian who seems to be more likely from Georgia or the Carolinas - and it's equally interesting to hear him talk about his love for fishing and the escapades that ensued, beginning at the early age of five. His mother, a professional cake decorator, and his Dad, a pro surfer who went on to be in the Navy, passed along a mix of really eclectic and valuable talents to Graham. Those influences, as well as hours spent hanging out in his uncle's recording studio playing guitar and writing songs in his teen years, combined to mold him into an utterly unique and creative talent.
Not only is he a gifted artist, but in another surprising turn – he’s also a gifted athlete. In fact, Graham Johnson was drafted right out of high school by the Miami Marlins as a starting pitcher. After spending a few seasons there and dealing with the challenges of a serious injury, music has indeed taken center stage. He is comfortable with being the focal point of the game and the pressures that go along with it, which is something you have to have to step up in the friendly, but competitive world of country music. This kind of story has repeatedly surfaced throughout country music history. Charlie Pride and Toby Keith, for example, both had the beginnings of huge music careers while in pro sports.
Graham's new 3 song EP showcases his great respect for the more traditional stylings of an Alan Jackson and the now classic rasp and soul of a Travis Tritt. He is heavily influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, as so many young artists are these days, but he has an uncanny ability to incorporate this element into his sound with total authenticity. The modern, aggressive edge that can stand up at radio today is there, but he stays away from the synthesized element, thus keeping it real.
In a short time, all those autographs that were signed in his pro baseball days are sure to resurface and be much more coveted than anybody ever imagined at the time. Get ready for Graham Johnson!
