Biography

This folk quartet is homegrown on the western slope of Colorado and offers up old time and original tunes with richly layered vocal harmonies and authentic acoustic resonance.

The elements are familiar — harmony singing, twin fiddle, open back banjo, guitar, mandolin, storytelling, and mountain culture. The alchemy is all their own.

Each member began making music from a young age. Lizzy Plotkin picked up the violin at age 5, Jenny Hill has been pickin' with her family since age 7, Katherine Taylor spent childhood singing in the Southern Babtist church, and Andrew Cameron began learning the piano and upright bass as a teen. The three founding ladies were raised in Tennessee, Texas, and Mississippi. After making a way to the west, they met in the Gunnison Valley and discovered that honeyed sound. Each is equally inspired to compose songs, and the diverse influences of the Americana soundscape are evident with hints of gospel, blues, country, gypsy, and jazz. The band crafts original tunes that honor tradition and are surely for this time.

"Fine Bloom" is the debut full-length studio album of original tunes by Free The Honey, produced by KC Groves (Uncle Earl). Their free- flowing vintage folk, jazz & gospel aesthetic is embodied by delicately soaring three –part harmonies, dedicated musicianship & place-based songwriting drawn from the deep well of feminine experience & indeli- ble ties to home, family & nature. These themes are beautifully appar- ent on tracks like Take Me Home & A Beautiful Life, in which Jenny fondly recalls her Texas heritage & Lizzy’s fiddle perfectly echoes the sentiment. Crooked Child is a breezy love song for the imperfections in all of us, & Vultures descends into the darkness & resolve of the soul with echoes of Nina Simone. The album’s closing track, Come Up To The Mountain, showcases Free The Honey’s stunning harmonic prow- ess, recalls Katherine’s childhood steeped in old-time religion & re- flects the band’s collective love of the land.

Lizzy describes Free The Honey as “a call to action to allow the honey inside, the sweet stuff, the music of the soul to flow freely.” Fine Bloom is pure expression & a perfect companion to the changing of seasons in nature & life.

Fine Bloom's Release marks three years of sharing their music. After recording two self-produced EPs, touring Colorado and the Southeast, sharing stages with folk stars such as The Claire Lynch Band, Hot Rize and Drew Emmit, this young quartet will continue to gather, infuse and serve up the distinct Americana sound that is Free the Honey.
