Fronted by mandolin player and humorist Ron Thomason, the Dry Branch Fire Squad plays old time and bluegrass music with a no-holds-barred sensibility that makes their tradition-based repertoire come alive. This all-gospel 1999 release is a perfect introduction to the band, bringing together recordings from their previous Rounder albums, along with several new and newly recorded songs. The group’s thrilling harmony singing is featured throughout, abetted by Hazel Dickens on the raw-boned “Hide You in the Blood.”
