"Somehow it wasn’t until the late ‘90s when I heard his band at the Down Home in Johnson City, Tenn., that I became completely gobsmacked by Sam Bush’s music. From Glamour And Grits, I worked my way back through his catalog. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the New Grass Revival, particularly the song “Reach”.

The first line really pulled me in: “Now, sometimes, I stop and wonder why I can’t let myself enjoy the space I’m in, all the wonderful places I’ve been…” And the verse goes on to further describe me…driven to the point of driving myself crazy! But the chorus is so encouraging, empowering, and uplifting: “You gotta reach a little bit higher, ’til the light within becomes a fire…”

Written by Johanna and John Hall, “Reach” debuted on the Orleans’ album Waking And Dreaming in 1976. The song was on the charts for 8 weeks, peaking at #51 in March of 1977. New Grass covered “Reach” on their 1981 album Commonwealth.

Although many of my own songs have ambitious melodies, “Reach” is well beyond anything I’ve ever attempted. In the New Grass, Sam and Cow swap leads on verse and chorus because of the octave plus a third range. Ever the overachiever, I decided to sing it all! Crafting my own countermelody during the last chorus was a lot trickier than I expected.

It’s always so much fun to create in studio with these incredible gals: Alison Brown (banjo); Missy Raines (bass); Sierra Hull (mandolin); Molly Tuttle (guitar). They bring their own flare to the track, but really make me grin each time I hear their instrumental nods to the New Grass guys, whom we all hold in high regard.

Thanks for giving it a spin, everybody!" - Becky Buller

WALL AROUND YOUR HEART
(Don Reno/Red Smiley/Buddie Smith)

Becky Buller and legendary singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale combine forces on the Reno and Smiley classic “Wall Around Your Heart”. Re-imagining this traditional song as a partner duet, they are joined by Jeremy Stephens (banjo), Lauren Price-Napier (mandolin), Missy Raines (bass), Stephen Mougin (guitar), and Stuart Duncan (twin fiddle). This single will be included in a full-length album of songs that inspired and informed Becky in her formative years.

Buller, known for her boundless energy and enthusiasm for music of many styles, digs deep in the Bluegrass well for this gem. When asked about her motivation to record this song, she says: “The Bluegrass Album Band introduced me to this lovely Reno And Smiley tune. The wide-ranging melody caught my attention; the line about ’the walls of Jericho’ reeled me in. I truly feel there’s a parallel dimension wherein we’re all talking about the songwriting of Don Reno in the same hallowed tones as that of Hank Cochran, Willie Nelson and Bill Anderson. This is probably the most traditional bluegrass cut I’ve ever recorded; Jeremy, Lauren, Missy, Stuart and Mojo gave it just the right vibe. And, of course, it was a blast getting to sing with Jim. Hope y’all enjoy this and thanks so very much for giving it a listen!”

MILLWORKER
(James Taylor)

Becky Buller's single MILLWORKER features her touring band along with guest vocalists Andrea Zonn and Dan Tyminski. It’s a fresh and sprightly take on Millworker by James Taylor, and while there have been other covers of this song, this is one of the few covered by a female artist. To celebrate Labor day, and the rough times of those gone before, we are releasing this now and plan to include it on a “covers” album in the future.

It’s a compelling story and a terrific performance by Becky and her band.
