Janie Rothfield & Allan Carr Return to their roots as a duo with a fiery blend of Old Time & Celtic Music
Since meeting in 1978, fiddler Janie Rothfield and her husband, Scottish singer and guitarist Allan Carr have been playing and recording their unique blend of Celtic and old time music together as a duo and with various bands and on a variety of recording projects. Their new album, The Two of Us, highlights Janie and Allan’s return to full-time touring together as a duo, performing and teaching in the US, UK, and Europe. Janie & Allan’s third duo recording, it features their signature sound with music from traditional Appalachian and Celtic Music sources and their own newly composed songs and tunes. After multiple band ensembles and recordings over the years, they have come full circle to where they started, blending their respective Celtic and American traditions, and writing new songs and tunes with their distinctive sound and arrangements. The album celebrates Janie and Allan’s re-emergence on the folk scene with their potent creative collective voices.
The Two of Us was recorded and mixed in Lexington Virginia, at the home studio of musician and engineer Al Tharp (Plank Road String Band, Beausoleil). Janie and Allan recorded it over five days with live takes and minimal overdubs, so that everything on the album can be played live in concert. Janie on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, and vocals, Allan on guitar, mandola, and vocals. Mastered by Charlie Pilzer at Tonal Park Studio, Takoma Park, Maryland. Art design by Gina Dilg, herself a fine old time fiddler, singer, and clogger.
Robin Morton (Boys of the Lough) released Janie and Allan's first duo album, There and Back, on his Scottish label, Temple Records, in 1983! That was followed up by their trio recording with Hadden, Rothfield, and Carr titled When These Shoes Were New in 1985 on Lismore (Scotland) and Shanachie/Meadowlark (USA). In 1987, Janie and Allan (with Martin Hadden) released Atlantic Bridge on Green Linnet. In 1990, Allan produced and played guitar on Northern Lights for Sampler Records, an instrumental album featuring traditional Scottish melodies with Janie on fiddle, Selma Kaplan on piano, and Sarah Bauhan on flute. With their band Red Hen, Janie and Allan released two highly acclaimed albums: 2009's Crossing and Birds of a Feather in 2011. Their band Coracree made the album Dancing in the Sky (2014). Allan released a solo recording of Songs from Northeast (Scotland) in 2010. Janie has numerous solo recordings including In the Moment (2005) on 5 String Productions, iFiddle theyBanjo (2008), and 2015’s Out of Thin Air. Janie has recordings with her duo Hen’s Teeth (2016) and The Idumea Quartet (2020) on PennyFiddle Records.
