Though they both have played music for most of their lives and have been married for almost 19 years, Stephen and Jana released their first single together - a duet version of "Like I Used To Do” - just this year.


Stephen Mougin is the vocalist and guitar player for the Sam Bush Band since 2006 with a 2020 debut solo album "Ordinary Soul”. The couple owns and operates Dark Shadow Recording, an independent record label and recording studio, where Stephen produces and engineers award winning albums for clients and label artists including Becky Buller, Rick Faris, The Henhouse Prowlers and more. He holds a degree in vocal music education and continues to bring his music-ed background to camps, private workshops, and occasional in-person lessons.

Jana Mougin, born in Slovakia and trained as a classical vocalist, became the lead singer, electric bassist and front person for the Czech/Slovak bluegrass band, Fragment in 1993. She spent a dozen years with the group as they toured around Europe and in the United States, recording eight albums along the way and earning her fans not just among audiences, but among her colleagues, too. In 2006, she married Stephen and moved to the United States— family and the family business became her top priorities. In 2023, Jana re-emerged as a vocalist under her own name with the chart-topping Dark Shadow release of “If I Didn’t Love You.”

As the two join forces during Stephen’s off-tour-season schedule, they enlist the help of talented music pals - including their son Sammy (14) to augment their shows. Stephen and Jana perform original material, curated covers, and traditional songs in a bluegrass/acoustic style.
