Fans and followers of the bluegrass band Seth Mulder & Midnight Run have cause to celebrate. Newly signed to Rebel Records out of Charlottesville Virginia, they are making their label debut with a unique yet explosive take on Chuck Berry’s immortal classic, “Johnny B. Goode.”
Known for their innovative approach and exhilarating output, the group ensures the new single stays true to form, reimagining this seminal rock and roll standard on a bluegrass basis, while effectively capturing the enthusiastic intent of the original through down-home designs. It’s a sound that the Gatlinburg Tennessee-based quintet has been known for since making its debut in 2015. Banjo, fiddle and mandolin take the lead, replicating the irrepressible riff that set the standard for practically every rock anthem that followed. Yet given this seamless mesh of past and present, it’s easy to imagine that the song was meant as a model for bluegrass as well.
It’s been nearly two years since the band — Seth Mulder (Mandolin, Lead Vocal), Chevy Watson (Guitar, Tenor Vocal), Colton Powers (Banjo, Baritone Vocal), Max Silverstein (Fiddle), and Tyler Griffith (Upright Bass) — released their last album,
In Dreams I Go Back, and their legions of admirers have eagerly awaited the band’s next offering. Given that their rendition of “Johnny B. Goode” has become a staple of their live sets, the decision to record their take on the track was only natural.
Offered as a treat for all those eagerly anticipating new music from the band, “Johnny B. Goode” is being released as a stand-alone single that precedes the group’s full-length Rebel Records debut due out in late summer 2024.
