Baptizing marked the lone gospel album recorded by The Seldom Scene. It also served as a transition from original lead singer and guitarist John Starling (who performs on half of the songs) to his replacement Phil Rosenthal who, not only sang and played guitar, but also contributed material for the band to record (three of his songs appear on this record). The group puts their own unique spin on a number of gospel favorites, including "By the Side of the Road," "Dreaming of a Little Cabin," "Fallen Leaves" and Flatt & Scruggs' "He Took Your Place."
