Ralph Stanley had a knack for discovering exemplary talent. One his great finds was Keith Whitley, a superb singer who spent three years as the lead vocalist in Stanley’s band. Whitley eventually positioned himself as a rising mainstream country music star in the middle 1980s. A decade earlier, he assisted with the making of Ralph’s Old Home Place album. It was an evenly divided mix of old songs and new; Stanley included the remakes because the originals were out of print at the time and fans still wanted to hear them. Of the new songs, the album’s title track was an ode to Stanley’s childhood days while “Bootleg John” told of the perils of life as the maker of illicit spirits. Long-time veteran Stanley sidemen Curly Ray Cline and Jack Cooke helped to round out the album.
