From the late 1970s through most of the 1980s, Ralph Stanley maintained a stable group of pickers that included lead singer Charlie Sizemore, lead guitarist Junior Blankenship, fiddler Curly Ray Cline, and bass player Jack Cooke. Working together for such a long time, the group achieved a cohesive synergy that made trips to the recording studio a delight – for musicians and fans alike. The Memory of Your Smile is dotted with highlights, including the oft-performed “I’ve Got a Mule to Ride,” complete with Ralph’s trademark old-time banjo stylings. Charlie Sizemore contributed one of his own compositions, “Melody of Love,” while West Coast songwriter Walden Dahl (writer of the Alison Krauss track “So Long So Wrong”) penned what became a perennial Stanley favorite, “City Lights.”
