Biography
Born in Kingston and raised in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Matik has always had a passion for music. Growing up, he was constantly around many different types of music. It was at home where his father would always turn up his home system playing hits from greats like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, the Legendary Bob Marley, and also a variety of Motowns' artists' great hits and many more. At his fathers place of business, Matik's uncles and cousins had a sound system setup in a lawn area right next to the shop. After hours when the shop was closed, they would play dancehall, roots reggae, ska and any other type of music the people wanted to hear. This would all take place every weekend in one of the busiest, most crowded parts of Ocho Rios, dead in the center of Market Square.
The name Matik came from his younger brothers all brainstorming one night, when out of nowhere, one of them shouted it out. He thought it represented him well, as he says whenever he hears a sound he likes, a beat for example, his brain goes to work and he feels "an automatic reflex" to want to come up with an idea, whether its lyrics or melody for a song. Matik's music will always have a reggae base, but Matik's style is very different from most dancehall artists. Being exposed to so much music from an early age, his music truly has no boundaries or limits, as he can write songs to instrumentals from any genre of music and command the listeners attention. Over the years he has honed his skills vocally, lyrically and musically. He has written All of his material and even produced some of his own tracks and riddims.
Upon arriving in Miami Florida, Matik was discovered by Supa-Dups of the world famous sound system Blackchiney. He has collaborated with well known artists such as Cecile, Don Dinero and many more. He has also worked with the legendary Tony "CD" Kelly on his most known track "In the zone" for which the video has gotten major play on reggae tv stations in Jamaica. Matik firmly believes that it is not only about the destination and where he sees himself going, but the journey itself is just as meaningful, if not more...
