Shining her light on simple, powerful truths, Lucy Billings is a keen observer with a soft heart. Known for her crystal-clear delivery of compelling songs that are, according to Jackie Morris at Folkworks.org, “simultaneously intimate and universal,” Lucy doesn’t back away from tough subjects, but instead delves into them with courage and fierce vulnerability.

Lucy’s third album, CARRY THE WATER (2014), produced by John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter), broke new ground with audiences by presenting a compelling journey through the twists and turns of life that we all experience. CARRY THE WATER’s title track was made into a video when Lucy collaborated with acclaimed filmmakers Molly Secours and J.W. Wilson to help raise a greater awareness of the global water crisis in less developed countries and even in America. The song calls for “many more wells all over the world” to enable all people to have access to clean water.

As a further commitment to this cause, Lucy has joined forces with Blood:Water and Amman Imman, two non-profit organizations that are devoted to creating sustainable means of increasing clean water access for people in developing countries. Lucy is raising funds to support the work of these organizations through sales of CARRY THE WATER, live concerts and other appearances.

These partnerships reflect Lucy’s commitment to using her music for social change. However, her realization that music could promote advocacy was ignited at 19, when she went to Appalachia to learn about the Brookside coal miners strike, black lung disease and other hazards of mining. Lucy attended gatherings about strip-mining and was inspired when she saw that many Appalachian musicians were using their music for social change.

Ironically, when Lucy released CARRY THE WATER in April of 2014, she was at a crossroads of her own in her 20-year career as a corporate attorney in California. Acknowledging her commitment to music and realizing that there is no time like the present, she was resolute and packed up her house in California and moved to Nashville to reinvent her life in a new city primarily as a songwriter/artist.

Her brave transition caught the eye of Oprah Magazine where Lucy is featured in the May 2015 issue in the article “Never Too Late” which chronicles the stories of five courageous women who listened to their hearts and changed their lives.

Not one to rest on the accomplishments of her last release, Lucy is busy penning the songs for her next album. “As with any major life change, there was a lot of upheaval, which made me dig even deeper for the themes of the songs.” The songs of the upcoming 2016 release reflect Lucy’s current journey and hopefulness, with topics ranging from socially relevant issues such as bullying, ageism and the inevitability of change, to following your heart and embracing new purpose and possibilities.

Lucy grew up in the desert outside of Tucson, Arizona. She has worked as a cowgirl, scientist and attorney, but the consistent thread in Lucy’s life that has sustained her own passage is her songwriting and being able to share her music with others through recording and performing.
