Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road are showcasing their softer side on the new single, “Mama’s Cross.” The Gospel recording is a heartfelt ballad that was co-written by Lorraine alongside Donna Ulisse, who also sings harmony vocals. The track delivers a very meaningful message about how sacred some things are in life. In addition to being available on all digital retailers and streaming platforms, the band is also giving the song away for FREE to all the mothers out there.
“Mama’s Cross” was inspired by the true story about Lorraine’s late mother Janice who passed away in 2019 in the last stages of dementia. Recently, Donna’s mom passed away with dementia just weeks ago in 2023. The song details the heartbreaking decision by Lorraine to keep her mother’s cross necklace, which always stood as a symbol of her love and faith. When Lorraine and Donna first met at Lorraine’s Coffee House, they noticed each other’s crosses. In their conversation, they found out they were both wearing their “mama’s crosses,” which were given to them by their mothers.
“We sat in her green room and she shared with me the most lovely story about a gold cross she wore around her neck. It was her mothers cross and Lorraine has worn it since her sweet mother had passed from dementia a few years before,” says Donna Ulisse. “As she lovingly showed me her cross, I pulled out the silver cross I wore around my neck that was my mothers. I wear it all the time. My mother also had dementia and as I type this right now, the shock of her passing is only three weeks old. Now the little silver cross holds a different meaning to me, so fragile and precious, just like the gold cross Lorraine holds dear. The song ‘Mama’s Cross’ is very real and heartfelt and Lorraine's performance is loaded with the emotion this song deserves. The message is a testimony to both our mothers and a tribute to their faith, something both us daughters are proud of!”
“It was so special to find out that my new friend, Donna Ulisse, and I shared the same story about our moms,” explains Lorraine Jordan. “We both wear the crosses everyday to symbolize the love for our mothers. It was an honor to co-write this song with one of the greatest songwriters in bluegrass music today. One of the highlights of this experience was having Donna sing this song with me on my latest project. It’s so heartwarming to have this song released on Mother’s Day. I appreciate the dj’s that plan on debuting the song during such a special holiday.”
The new release is the follow-up to the project’s title-cut, “A Little Bit of Bluegrass.” It went on to become a huge hit on radio, achieving significant airplay on SiriusXM’s Bluegrass Junction, while breaking the record for the most weeks at No. 1 on Mountain Bluegrass with David Pugh and becoming their No. 1 song of 2022. Skope Magazine raved about the single, saying “The song’s message is simple and has instant appeal. Jordan and Carolina Road deliver a straightforward payoff with the song’s refrain that never overstays its welcome with listeners.” It continues to climb the Bluegrass Unlimited chart as well, currently sitting at No. 3 for the month of May on their Top 30 Bluegrass Songs survey. The single is featured on Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road’s latest project, A Little Bit of Bluegrass. In addition to penning the song together, Ulisse and Jordan also teamed up for the official music video (watch it HERE).
