Jeremy Stephens, Corrina Rose Logston Stephens and Kurt Stephenson, multi-talented musicians and singers for High Fidelity, could be considered bluegrass archaeologists who excavate rare gems of forgotten or overlooked bluegrass and old-time music and make them shine again for new audiences.
Music In My Soul, the latest collaborative endeavor from High Fidelity, brings forth gospel treasures that will move your feet and your soul.
“I’m Ready to Go” gets the album off to a rousing start by recapturing the spirit of traditional bluegrass from the Brewster Brothers. The Lewis Family and Reno & Smiley inspired “Walking With My Savior,” “I’ll Be No Stranger There,” and “I Need the Prayers,” while the fiddler in High Fidelity, Corrina Rose Logston Stephens, contributes the first ever “original” composition by the group, her own exceptional “The Mighty Name of Jesus.” The song evokes the spirit and style of the esteemed gospel tradition of the Louvin Brothers. Jeremy Stephens reaches way back to 1927 and revives the title cut, “Music in My Soul,” for the project from a recording by the Jones County, Mississippi Bush Family.
A lively instrumental rendition of “There Is Power in the Blood” breathes new life into an 1899 gospel classic. Sister and brother Wanda Dalton and Randall Hylton of Floyd County, Virginia contribute to the mix with their compositions of “The Storm” and “My Lord Is Taking Me Away” while Ralph Stanley’s “The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn” adds more power to High Fidelity’s own interpretation of these musical sermons. Music In My Soul finishes with strong renditions of a Pleasant View Quartet version of “I’m a Pilgrim,” Carl Story’s “My Lord Keeps a Record,” Jim & Jesse’s “Are You Lost in Sin” and the Bailes Brothers’ “Were Living in the Last Days Now.”
High Fidelity, composed of Jeremy Stephens, Corrina Rose Logston Stephens, Kurt Stephenson, Daniel Amick and Vickie Vaughn, always produces a high quality product that reflects their stellar talents. They put their own unique and powerful interpretation into each song that shows each of them has “music in their souls.”
