Bigger, Badder and Better than ever!
The Real Girls of Rock Of Rock Are Back With A Vengeance!
Revved up and chock full of amplified energy, the 2008 Girls Rock & Girls Rule tour (GRGR) is pumped and ready to roll!
Just seven years ago -- and frustrated by the lack of industry opportunities for women in the harder rock genres --- NYC rocker Gail Silverman decided to take matters into her own hands and created Girls Rock and Girls Rule. Though it was tough going at first, the rewards reaped from her creation are countless. GRGR's ongoing mission of increasing exposure and opportunities for all of the awesome, female-infused rock bands, is catching on -- in all harder-than-folk genres like indie, punk, hardcore, math rock and metal. "What do you get when you put a bunch of kick-a#$ rock chicks together with a sense of purpose? You get a better world – or at the very least a good step towards one – with one great soundtrack" says StephenBailey.com
In 2006 GRGR took things to the next level and began touring. And this year Gail and her girls have events planned in 13 locations along the East Coast. The showcases feature five core independent artist-led NYC bands; G-spot, Loki the Grump, Marisa Mini, RewBee and Americas’s Sweetheart, who have partnered with their local sisters in each city they visit. This year’s tour will feature more then 30 up and coming female rockers, the bands selected must write and play original music and the other requirement is that they play hard! Given the challenging state of the music industry, GRGR is on the cutting edge of the next trend in music bringing female rockers to the forefront -- beyond pop and R&B genres. And it's about time!! More than ever, and especially in today's competitive market, the world needs a platform that will bring attention to all the fantastic women who are making of music people want to hear. And no -- these are not retouched pop princesses or radio clones. They are one-of-a-kind originals ready to show the world that rockin’ ladies deserve to be heard!
Part of the GRGR mission is to give back to the community, too. The current beneficiary is Willie Mae Rock Camp Girls, which receives a portion of proceeds from each event. WMRC was founded in 2004 and is a New York City-based nonprofit summer day camp serving girls ages 8 to 18. The program offers girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform, learn about different types of music, and, most importantly, rock out in a supportive environment that fosters self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity and tolerance.
