I'm lookin’ for that Lonely Street
I've got a sad, sad tale to tell
I need a place to go and weep
Where’s this place called Lonely Street
A place where there’s just loneliness
Where dim lights bring forgetfulness
Where broken dreams and mem’ries meet
Where’s this place called Lonely Street
1. Monroe’s Mandolin
Virginia Long and Vernon Long
(Triple V Ozark Mountain Music/BMI)
This was first recorded by my dear friends, The Bressler Brothers, from Eminence, MO. Bill Monroe is the reason I play bluegrass music. I was a small child the first time I heard him, and I was bitten by the bluegrass bug for life. This is a song to honor the “Father of Bluegrass Music.”
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, baritone vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, lead vocal
Carl White – bass, tenor vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
2. Lonely Street
Carl Belew, Kenny Sowder and W.S. Stevenson (Sony/ATV Acuff Rose Music/BMI)
I can’t begin to tell you the number of artists who have recorded this song since Carl Belew co-wrote and recorded it. I’ve always heard it done solo, and for the most part, with a slow tempo. I wanted to have a trio through the whole song and decided to speed up the tempo. I think you will enjoy the instruments playing harmony to each other. Lonely Street is pure in its simplicity of lyrics and has a melody that just stays with you.
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, lead vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, tenor vocal
Carl White – bass, baritone vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
3. Ain’t A Woman Somebody When She’s Gone
Buddy Cannon and Tommy Collins
(Hotdoggone Music/BMI,Universal Songs of Polygram International, Inc./BMI)
Buddy Cannon has long been one of my favorite song-writers. When he sent me this one, I thought about how we sometimes don’t appreciate the good things in life until they are gone.
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, lead vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, baritone vocal
Carl White – bass, tenor vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar, percussion
Brandon Godman – fiddle
4. Big Wind
George McCormick, Wayne Walker and Alex Zanetis
(Sony ATV Tree Publishing/BMI, Universal Songs of Polygram International, Inc./BMI)
Porter Wagoner recorded this a long time back. It was co-written by George McCormick who was a Wagon Master for many years, singing harmony with Porter and Don Warden. While I was looking for, and thinking about song possibilities, I remembered this one, and felt it would make a good hard driving, hot picking song. Darren does a great job on the lead vocals, and Carl is up in the clouds at the end. I believe we have hit the mark on this one.
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, baritone vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, lead vocal
Carl White – bass, tenor vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
5. Oh Heart, Look What You’ve Done
Carl Jackson and Russ Roberts
(Too Strong Songs/ASCAP, Nikki Dee Music/BMI)
Carl Jackson has written and co-written more great songs than I have time or space to tell you about. This song has a different take on affairs of the heart. It tells about how the heart overrules the mind when it comes to love. Great melody, great lyrics—I couldn’t ask for more! Well, maybe a number one song!
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, baritone vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, lead vocal
Carl White – bass, tenor vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
6. The Human Race
Tim Mensy, Jimmy Phillips and Gene Dobbins
(1990 Music City Music, Inc. administered by EMI April Music Inc./ASCAP)
Because of the tough economic times we are experiencing, this song hit home for me. Even though it’s been said that we live in the land of plenty, we have wasted so much and been so careless. I hope everyone who hears this song begins to think about how to right the wrong.
Doyle Lawson – guitar, lead vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, tenor vocal
Carl White – bass, baritone vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar, percussion
Brandon Godman – fiddle
7. Call Me Up and I’ll Come Callin’ On You
Marty Robbins (Sony/ATV Acuff Rose Music/BMI)
I love the happy feel of this old Marty Robbins song. I heard him sing it on the Opry in the mid-1950s and I think it lends itself to bluegrass singin’ and pickin’ quite well.
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, baritone vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, lead vocal
Carl White – bass, low tenor vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
8. Yesterday’s Songs
Lisa Shaffer, Mark Simos and Jon Weisberger
(KLMS Music/ASCAP, Devachan Music/BMI, Use Your
Words Music/BMI)
When I heard this song, I wanted to give it an old-time, mountain style feel. It speaks about things that brought back wonderful memories of my youth. Maybe some of you will recall those days. Thanks to Jon Weisberger, Lisa Shaffer and Mark Simos for giving me first crack at it.
Doyle Lawson – guitar, banjo, lead vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, tenor vocal
Carl White – bass
Josh Swift – Weisenborn guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
9. Down Around Bear Cove
Josh Swift and Doyle Lawson
(Top O’Holston Publishing/BMI)
Josh Swift started this instrumental. He wrote the first part and I wrote the bridge. It’s a catchy tune with some elements of swing, as well as bluegrass. We had fun jamming on this one. Josh and Brandon do a great job playing tenor and baritone harmonies to my lead. It’s a little harder to play than it sounds, and we love the challenge.
Doyle Lawson – mandolin
Darren Beachley – guitar
Carl White – bass
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
Brandon Godman – fiddle
10. Johnny and Sally
Dave Lindsey, Michael Keith and Matt Lindsey
(Dave Lindsey Music/ASCAP, Bright Like The Sun Music/BMI, Matt Lindsey Music LLC/ASCAP)
This song tells of unwavering love between a boy and a girl, and it is told from the perspective of their song. It tells a good story, has a good melody, and is a perfect vehicle for the harmonies I love to do.
Doyle Lawson – mandolin, baritone vocal
Darren Beachley – guitar, lead vocal
Carl White – bass, low tenor vocal
Joey Cox – banjo
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar
David Johnson– fiddle
11. My Real World of Make Believe
Buddy Cannon and Michael Wayne Smotherman
(Hotdoggone Music/BMI, Universal Songs of Polygram International Inc./BMI)
Have you ever wanted something you knew you couldn’t have? This song is an example of that. It’s the story of
a couple seemingly in love until the end. The problem being that it’s all his make believe world. I love the story it tells. Thanks, Buddy.

Darren Beachley – guitar, tenor vocal
Carl White – bass, baritone vocal
Joey Cox – guitar
Josh Swift – resophonic guitar, percussion

12. When the Last of Our Days Shall Come
Chris Stuart (Backcountry Music/BMI)
I ran into Chris Stuart at a festival in Woodstown, NJ and told him how much I like his song writing. He sent me this one and I knew it would fit right in with the other songs on the project. This is a good driving Bluegrass Gospel song that Darren really shines on the high lead vocal.
