Biography
Predisposed and self-taught, Derek Lefholz has developed a passion for music by fostering a vision through an untraditional approach. The last year has established him as a force in the electronic music industry with the release of two artist EPs, and multiple dance singles geared towards the electronic music scene.
Lefholz grew up in a musician's family and has learned first hand the many skills needed to become a well-versed musician. At the tender age of three, he would jump on stage to sing back up for his Dad’s band, which at the time played a combination of Blues, Rock and Southern Rock. Captivated by the creativity in making music, Lefholz began experimenting with a variety of musical instruments in middle school. After only a few short months playing the saxophone in the school band, he realized that his passion at that time was behind the drum set. Forming his own band and performing in the 8th grade talent show, the young musicians tackled the apprehensions of playing in front of an audience of peers. As the high school years approached Derek articulately balanced athletics and music. Winning a State Football Championship and attending many live concerts a vision of a future in music was becoming more prevalent.
Graduating in the spring of ’96, Lefholz enrolled in College at the University of Missouri, majoring in Business and Public Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. Yearning for more knowledge in the world of music, sound and performance, he began recording and producing original compositions. "I have always been involved with music - jamming, performing, recording, etc. when your born into something like this, it just becomes second nature."
Always taking a proactive approach, during the summer of his junior year, Derek ventured to the Recording Workshop to gain insight into the essential skills of Music Production and Engineering. Upon his return to finish his Bachelors Degree, he landed a job as a Live and Studio Engineer with Crazy Music Sound & Light in Columbia, MO. During his years with Crazy Music and his Mentor Ken Sheppard, Lefholz secured the knowledge that would later become vital in his musical creations. "I never knew where all the knowledge I was gaining would lead - I just knew that I had a passion for creating music and wanted to be involved with every aspect of music production and development."
After being married, he and his bride made a move to Nashville to gain a better understanding of what it took to advance a career behind the scenes. As an Account Coordinator and Publicist, he joined Pam Lewis’s team of media experts. Recently, Derek has focused on music production while continuing a career transition into the music scoring profession. “By starting out in electronic music I have gained the understanding of composing, creation, instruments, sounds, harmonies, melodies, rhythm and the development of these ideas into a unified movement of art and sound.”
