Biography
Delta Moon has looked to its musical roots, added some special sauce, and come up with something strikingly fresh and original.
Delta Moon is framed by the unique dual slide guitar work of Tom Gray and Mark Johnson. The band formed in the late 1990s in the Atlanta neighborhood of Inman Park. Scott Callison played drums with the group in the early days, left for a five year stint on the road with Tinsley Ellis, and in 2003 returned to Delta Moon. Singer Kristin Markiton joined the troupe in fall, 2004. And Phil Skipper, from the roots band Cast Iron Filter, became the bassist in 2005.
Howlin, their 4th effort is the first CD recorded with Kristin and Phil. The confidence Delta Moon has shows in the 9 original tracks and 2 well-chosen covers. The juxtapositions the band has always been about are present: Kristins sweet vocals blending with Tom Grays gruffer sound, the two slide guitars intertwining and challenging, and the rhythm sections solid, yet grooving backbeat. A fun mix of blues, southern-boogie and rock - with an Americana soul.
Delta Moon has kicked its music up to a new level, with an attitude described by the English reviewer Peter Baker: This is what roots music needs so badly, superb musicians, who arent up their own bums, having a good time and sharing it with the audience.
