Dave Evans burst onto the Bluegrass scene in 1979 with the release of his self-titled debut
Dave Evans and River Bend quickly followed by
Call Me Long Gone the following year. Both albums were recorded for the small Cincinnati-based Vetco Records. Evans was already known in southern Ohio as an ace banjo player for Larry Sparks, The Boys From Indiana, Earl Taylor and others, but his first recordings on his own introduced a unique, powerful, and soulful voice that created an immediate buzz throughout the bluegrass community.
Evans was one of the most emotive singers you’ll find in any genre. A live performance for Dave was an emotional experience and it was not uncommon for him to choke up as he poured himself into a sad song. Evans was, as they say, “the real deal” and his singing was pure country soul.
This release, combining the best of those first two recordings, includes his unmatched versions of “99 Years,” “From Life’s Other Side” and “Barbara Allen” and gives the listener a look into the past of one of the true giants of traditional bluegrass music.
