Biography
Backup Johnny was formed in early 2007 by the ideas of Joey Romley (Vocals and Keys) and Brett Mallard (Drums). By summer of 07 they were in the studio recording their first LP titled 'Heartaches and Hangovers', and Tyler Evans filled in on guitar and bass for the album. Nick Romero joined the band in October to play bass full time and they started playing shows as a full band in November, starting with their CD release show. Since then, they have gained a great local fan base in Bakersfield and have experienced great success off the first album. Backup Johnny went on their first tour in the summer of '08, traveling up and down california, hitting major cities and spreading their music to new ears. They have also appeared in VERBICIDE MAGAZINE's UNSIGNED Issue Number 23 that came out in Spring of '08, and earned a well deserved spot on the "Top Four BEST UNSIGNED POP BANDS".
"It feels like rock but still maintains a pop sensibility in narrative storytelling."-VERBICIDE Magazine
They have since completed their second album, a 5 song EP titled 'Dive'. To celebrate the release of the new album, Backup Johnny went on a very successful 7-state tour that took them from Bakersfield to Nashville and everywhere in between. They are a band to check out live and leave you humming their songs on the way home with their strong harmonies and catchy hooks. Keep your eye out for them because they are confident and dedicated in their music and are moving fast!
