Biography

Terrance Fleming, better known as Bay-Dilla, has suffered more hardships than the average person has, yet he has withstood his turbulent beginnings. Born in Rochester, NY on August 29, 1980 to an 18-year-old mother and 31-year-old father, Bay-Dilla’s early life was unstable and seemed destined for a tragic end. His father was a hustler and his mother was addicted to crack, leaving the eldest of five children to move to Anchorage, Alaska to live with his grandmother. With the family being limited to a small amount of money, Bay was forced to resort to other ways of making money in the streets.
After barely escaping legal issues, Bay and his cousin ventured into music with the dream of becoming the first ones to do gangsta rap in Alaska. Influenced by a host of hip hop legends including Easy-E, Bun B, E-40 and Jadakiss, Bay drew from their music since they reminded him that success was possible. Before he knew it, he, along with his friends and cousin, was in direct competition with the then-“King of Uncut,” Joker the Bail Bonds Man. That rivalry ended up becoming a fruitful friendship as Joker helped Bay’s cousin learn to loop beats.
Once Bay and his friends, then collectively called Dem Villenz, released three CD’s to good response, they packed up and moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2002. Their stay in Atlanta was short-lived and Bay returned to Alaska in 2003, where he has since made great strides, opening a recording studio called Out the Cutt Ent, along with his promotional company that bears the same name.
Some of the self-educated artists’ other accomplishments include being featured in Ozone magazine’s “Patiently Waiting” section, along with being featured on the magazine’s cover twice. He has been privileged to work with some of hip hop’s leading names including Sean Paul of the Youngbloodz, Kia Shine, Mr. Fab and Bun B. His single “They Know Me” is steadily gaining popularity along the West Coast. With a determination to succeed and skilled singles, Bay-Dilla will not be “patiently waiting” for much longer.
