Partial liner notes from The Distance:
This album has meant more to me than anything I have ever musically been a part of. I started thinking back to when we first tossed around ideas of what the album might sound like – and feel like. I wanted it to be me. I wanted it to feel as warm and comfortable as being at home. I wanted it to be as easy to listen to as it is to sit in your rocking chair on a beautiful Spring day. I wanted to choose songs that made me feel something when I heard them. Maybe I would laugh, cry, smile, or not be able to sit still. Whatever it was…..I wanted it to have feeling. Tell a story. Paint a picture in your mind and in your heart.
I am honored to bring this to you in hopes that you feel the things in these amazing songs that I do. “Luxury Liner” is a song that Steve Gulley brought to my attention and I loved from the very first note! After hearing Emmy Lou Harris absolutely tear it up, I was hooked! This album wouldn’t be the same without it.
“Catch My Breath” is a song written by my cousin and amazing songwriter, Bobby Boyd. Bobby has written hits for Garth Brooks, George Strait, Patty Loveless and many more. When he sent me this song I cried. I couldn’t wait to get it recorded. I wanted it to sound like something you would hear in the 1960’s on the Grand Ole Opry being sung by my favorite….Patsy Cline.
“Give My Love” is one of the most beautiful gospel songs I’ve ever heard. Growing up in a Christian family and singing gospel music from the time I was 9 years old, this song really hit home with me. It is simply amazing.
Every girl loves a love story. Sometimes they are happy….sometimes sad…..sometimes both. “Eugene and Diane” is a song that tells one of those stories. I have been a fan of Carl Jackson for many years and am honored to have this on the album.
“All I Have To Do Is Breathe” was given to me and written by Steve Gulley and Tim Stafford. If there ever was a song I need to live by, this is it. I don’t know of a soul that wouldn’t be able to relate to this song. “When the day is through, all I really have to do is Breathe.”
“Get Me Over You” was written by one of my best friends, Jennifer Strickland. I’ve never heard anything she’s written that I didn’t fall in love with."
“Keep Your Memory Warm” is a song written by Steve Gulley. The song appeared on a demo with with numerous tracks, but wasn’t the song he originally pitched to me. After listening to it no less than a million times, I knew this one was a winner!
“The Distance” – All I can say is wow. If I had to choose one last song to ever sing…..this would be it.
I hope you enjoy THE DISTANCE as much as I enjoyed performing these songs. Thank you for all of the love and support. ~ Carrie Hassler
