AUSTIN SINGER-SONGWRITER TERRY KLEIN’S DEBUT RECORD, GREAT NORTHERN , ANNOUNCES THE
ARRIVAL OF A BOLD NEW VOICE
Featuring some of Austin’s best musicians and produced by Walt Wilkins, an album of deeply personal
songs about love, work, and family that will move you
AUSTIN, TX -- Great Northern is singer-songwriter Terry Klein’s debut record, a rich collection of eight
great-sounding songs about love, work, family, getting old, and getting in trouble. Beloved Texas songwriter
Walt Wilkins produced Great Northern and it features a murderers’ row of Austin’s best musicians.
Great Northern has one indelible line after another. In “Everywhere but Here,” Terry sings of a couple that can
only manage to stay in love when they’re apart: “Like a picture painted by Seurat/Perfect from a distance but
a tempest the closer we got.” In “Dull Women Keep Immaculate Homes”, it’s everyone’s favorite grandmother
who says “Oh, I’ve been so blessed/There’s joy in this life if you’re willing to make a mess.” And in “Wasted on
the Living”, Terry sings the story of a convict doomed to a life sentence based on the testimony of a waitress
who served him “a burnt-up cup of bitter midnight coffee.” Wrought with care, recorded with compassion, the
songs on Great Northern will stick with you. “Making this record was a joyous experience for me,” Terry says.
“I can’t wait to get these songs out into the world and see what they can do.”
Terry digs into shared experiences: the ball-point pen notches we scratch on doorframes as our kids grow up
(“Notches”), the pain of being in love with someone struggling with mental illness (“Back to Being You”), and
how lonely it can be to get old and sick (“Madeline”). No song captures what Terry is after like “Better Luck
Next Time”, where we watch a young couple dealing with a devastating setback and the magical, healing
power of love. Master songwriter Mary Gauthier says the song “ could have been written by Springsteen, Van
Zandt, or Earle. But, no, this amazing song came from the guitar of a wonderful new voice in songwriting.”
And Rodney Crowell says that “T erry Klein has the poet’s heart and it's very much in evidence on his brand
new collection of songs.”
Walt Wilkins’ discovery of Great Northern’s opening track, “Watchman”, at a songwriting workshop in October
2015 set Terry and Walt’s partnership in motion. When it came time for Terry to make the record, Walt was
the obvious choice to produce it. The result is an album of consistently strong material that just, plain sounds
good. “ When I heard the songs on this record for the first time, I was floored,” Walt says. “ I knew I was
hearing a true songwriter, and a true craftsman. These songs deal with real moments, elements, depths of the
human spirit. The songs here still move me. Welcome a strong collection of songs and a new clear, bold voice.”
The album was recorded and engineered by local folk hero Ron Flynt at Austin’s at Jumping Dog Studios.
“The songs come first,” Terry says. “Walt, Ron, and I were shooting for textures and arrangements that do
more than just support the emotional content of the songs. What we got were arrangements that highlight
that content.” The result is Great Northern , a record that you can (and will) listen to over and over again.
Terry is a recovering lawyer and former political operative who didn’t write his first song until he was forty.
He’s lived in Boston, Los Angeles, Ann Arbor, Charlotte, Washington, DC, and San Francisco. He moved to
Austin in July 2016 with his wife, Lindsay, and their daughters, Zoe (12) and Beatrice (8). He now writes and
performs full-time. And we’re all better for it.
