Texas - originally composed by Texas/Tennessee Troubadour, Robin Bernard, an old friend and native Texan, now living in Nashville. Dominic loved the feel of the song and worked on developing the narrative and arrangement. His version tells the story of a man facing the consequences of a life lived on the fringe, haunted from within and without, and resigning to travel the only road left open to him—to leave his country for a life on the run as a wanted criminal.
We went into the studio with this song basically un-arranged and tried a lot of different versions before we found it. An organic approach won out after Dom played the song through and everyone began to contribute little ideas one-by-one. The overall sparse treatment seemed to work the best, with organ going on to fill in the low end. Provides a nice contrast to our usual instrumentation for the mid-record point.
Dom played guitar and sang, Tony sang, Billy plays mandola and finger-style guitar, Trevor plays mandolin and Hammond B3.
