Wildfire, the acclaimed Bluegrass band known for their rich sound and powerful storytelling, has released a new single titled “If Something Should Happen.” The mid-tempo track features lead vocals from Wildfire’s Robert Hale and showcases the talents of Curt Chapman (bass), Johnny Lewis (banjo), Matt DeSpain (dobro) and Scott Napier (mandolin). This marks the first release from the band since their 2022 album Quiet Country Town, and it’s now available on all digital and streaming platforms.
“If Something Should Happen” was penned by songwriters Jim Brown, Dan Demay, and Dave Turnbull. The poignant lyrics tell the story of a father preparing for surgery, strongly implied to be for cancer, as he shares his fears with a childhood friend. The father asks his friend to look after his family in case the worst happens—checking in on his wife and helping to raise his nine-year-old son. The song captures the depth of the father's concerns, highlighting the emotional weight of facing the unknown and the strength it takes to entrust a loved one’s future to a dear friend. Some listeners may recognize the song from Darryl Worley's original recording in the mid-2000s. The recording also features former Wildfire member Steve Thomas on fiddle.
"This is a song that makes you think and definitely pulls at the heartstrings. A story told from the point of view of a family man facing a serious health challenge,” explains Robert Hale. “He's talking to his best friend about things he wants to be sure are taken care of... if something should happen."
This release continues Wildfire's tradition of blending emotionally charged ballads with their dynamic Bluegrass sound. Since forming in 2000, the band has consistently delivered powerful performances, appealing to both traditional and contemporary Bluegrass audiences alike. Their 2022 album Quiet Country Town produced three successful singles, including “Ride the Train,” the title-track, and “What Would Your Memories Do” featuring Dale Ann Bradley, while lead singer Robert Hale also released his hit solo single, "What People Think of Me is None of My Business," earlier this year.
