Bluegrass Today Review
Written by John Lawless of "Bluegrass Today"

Bluegrass doesn’t seem to generate as many thematic or concept albums as you find in other genres. We’ve had a few – Rural Rhythm’s God Didn’t Choose Sides comes to mind – but they are the exception rather than the rule.
Now comes Valerie Smith with a particularly ambitious concept project. Nothing so middling as the War Between The States. Val is taking on The Human Condition for her next record.
Nearly completed, the album is being produced by Mike Scott, who is also playing banjo and adding harmony vocals. Aubrey Haynie is playing fiddle and mandolin, Adam Chaffins is on bass, and Tim May on guitar and mandolin. A good half dozen guest vocalists share in the harmonies.
Val tells us that it is a response to the difficulties she had experienced with her voice of late.
“The project is ‘Bluegrass, acoustically inspired,’ (like most of my previous work). I built a special website for it because it is more of a philosophy rather than a ‘Valerie Smith’ project.
My last 3 years had been so rough, that when working with Mike Scott, we decided to make lemonade out of lemons. It is amazing how music can empower you (whether listening or making it) and be a healing component for your soul.”
More will be revealed over the next few weeks in a series of videos, starting with this one.

New Single Release: Blame It On the Bluegrass
Bell Buckle Records is pleased to announce the new single release, “Blame It On the Bluegrass” by VALERIE SMITH & Liberty Pike. The song was written by Becky Buller and Elizabeth Shrum and is the title track from Valerie's long awaited new album produced by Becky Buller and set for release January 11, 2011.

"Blame it On The Bluegrass is like a breath of fresh air. It's a cleverly-written, expertly performed song featuring the voice of one of the music's most unique and underrated singers. This is one that can't-miss,” said Kyle Cantrell, Sirius-XM Radio.

“If you’re someone who enjoys numerical significance, the release date of VALERIE SMITH & Liberty Pike’s CD, BLAME IT ON THE BLUEGRASS, 1-11-11, should be pretty hard to top. Not only are the members of this band #1 supporters of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, they also made history here back in January of 2010. While VSLP was in Owensboro performing for 24 elementary schools as part of our Bluegrass in the Schools program, they met each evening in ‘The Cave’ at the museum. There, surrounded by artifacts of bluegrass legends, undaunted by illness, fatigue, ice and snow, they came together with enormous energy and creativity and made history by becoming the first band to ever record a CD inside the hallowed walls of the IBMM. We wish them every success with their new and wonderful CD,” said Gabrielle Gray, Executive Director of the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky.
