That ol’ fire in my bones
Beggin’ me to flee from home
It caught me in the night
While you lay sleeping
Took the steering wheel in hand
Driving out across the land
Until I ran the gas tank down to empty

Now if the Road’s Salvation I will follow
Though I couldn’t keep myself back if I tried
But if the the road’s the devil darling find me
And let homeward be my guide

An albatross can fly
More than forty days and nights
If I keep moving I might do the same
So it’s better not to dwell
In a rest stop or motel
Or else my thoughts to you might start to stray

Now if the Road’s Salvation I will follow
Though I couldn’t keep myself back if I tried
But if the the road’s the devil darling find me
And let homeward be my guide

Some nights when I’m alone
I pick up the telephone
And almost call to say I’m coming back
But I cannot guarantee
That I will ever be
Ready to give up my roving ways

For if the Road’s Salvation I will follow
Though I couldn’t keep myself back if I tried
But if the the road’s the devil darling find me
And let homeward be my guide

For if the Road’s Salvation I must follow
And let homeward be my guide
