I used to know Hank
we used to have a drink together sometimes
Hell I didn't even know he played guitar
until I saw his name on a poster once

We kind of liked each other you know
in a drifting kind of way
He was one guy I felt good about
spending extra money on
to buy him a drink

Alabama born in Montgomery he quit school
playing on the radio and beer joints
Struggle and rejection filled his cup
until he landed on the stage in Nashville

I'm a drifting cowboy out on the road
I'm a drifting cowboy the wind is my soul
I'm a drifting cowboy sometimes I can't see
drifting takes the wind out of me

After a while I never saw him again
I knew he was out on the road
playing all kinds of joints
way out of town
I never realized he was so young

Then on day I heard he died
in the backseat of his car
I bought a record of his that day
and listened to it all night long
it was the best and worst party I ever had
knowing that Hank was gone

Alabama born in Montgomery he quit school
playing on the radio and beer joints
Struggle and rejection filled his cup
until he landed on the stage in Nashville
