Naked Truth are one of the first Black American Punk Metal bands to break through during punks resurgence in the mid to late 80’s. Based out of Atlanta, Georgia the quartet began cutting their musical teeth in the local hardcore scene in 1988. The bands founding members came from far afield: vocalist Doug Watts came from Detroit, bassist Jeff from Harlem, New York, and drummer Bernard Dawson from Los Angeles, while Jimmie Westley was the only Georgia native, from Savannah.
Life was initially tough for a black punk metal band in Georgia, but the dreadlocked groups powerful singer, Doug Watts, caught the interest of former Clash manager Bernie Rhodes, and he helped the band sign to Sony. Once signed they relocated to London. After meeting bassist London-born Kwame Boaten the band was ready for the road.
The band’s first album was Green With Rage introduced Naked Truth's raw, aggressive sound, which was given an individual slant by jazz and funk influences. Next they offered up Read between the lines EP and finally their last album “ The Cure”. The band were fortunate to pick up a UK tour with Scat Opera and Little Angels, after a Motorhead support slot was lost due to a tour cancellation by lead singer (Lemmy).
During the late 80’s and early 90’s the band built up a cult following, helped by a series of London residencies. The band released a final album “Fight” that showed the band's ability to mix styles as diverse as jazz and death metal seamlessly and convincingly, while Watts supplied varied vocals, from rap to all-out hard-core rage, and intelligent lyrics. The band blended genre’s that had never been done before and combined this with an incredibly powerful and moving live performance at every show, often draining Watts to the point of collapse. The fans loved every minute of the shows and this is one of the main reasons that the band is still hailed as a pioneer even in today’s burnout world of fast food and instant fame, The Naked Truth have carved their name in rocks historical musical stones and will forever be remembered as the pioneering outfit that broke new ground under Bernie Rhodes guiding management.
In 2013 the band has now reformed under the leadership of Doug Watts. The band are now signed to indie powerhouse “ Blue Pie Records “ and are working on new material and the development of a strong and powerful live show to take on the road in 2015.
