Avidya
Avidya slips into the room
Billowing in her cloud of gloom
Settles into her favorite chair

Avidya slides up to my ear
Whispering, relishing every fear
Blossoms wither under her stare

My beloved malcontent
Nothing here is permanent
Many a rose fades too soon

She wants to draw out each mistake
All the choices I didn’t make
Every slight, each injury

Her chatter incessant, cruel and unkind
She wants to unravel my peace of mind
Scratch the scab until it bleeds

My melancholy confidant
I’m weary of the things you want
Let’s go outside and laugh at the moon

Serious in her sovereignty
Her illusions cling to me
Like heady perfume I can’t wash away
A battle of wills, who will obey
Today, today

Avidya loves the long winter night
Cold and relentless, void of light
Dawn will break and soon she’ll be gone

My beloved malcontent
Nothing here is permanent
Many a rose fades too soon
My melancholy confidant
I’m weary of the things you want
Let’s go outside and laugh at the moon
