In the summer of 2005, Alex and his father, Sandy visited Nashville, following the news that his father was in remission from cancer. Alex and his dad planned to pick some bluegrass all week. Sunday night, they arrived at the world famous Station Inn and picked all night. The following Monday night, they jammed at the Gibson Showcase.
The following Tuesday, while checking out the Ernest Tubb Record Shop on Broadway, Alex noticed a fella he recognized from both the Station Inn jam, as well as the night before at Gibson… so he introduced himself. The guy’s name was John Diamond, a multi-instrumentalist from Watonga, OK. They quickly hit it off and three joined forces for the rest of the week, picking every night. They wrapped it up with Friday night performance at the nearby KOA Campground with Alex’s longtime friend and bassist, the late Bob Smiley.
John told Alex that if he was ever in Nashville, he’d have a place to stay. As fate would deliver it, three months later, Alex found himself in Bristol, TN at the Davey Crocket Truck Stop headed to Nashville. He called John and reminded him of the offer and then notified John he’d meet him at the Station Inn in about 7 hours. For three months, Alex crashed on John’s couch at his apartment on Stewarts Ferry Pike.
They picked and sang together every night and developed a lasting relationship. When Rock Hearts was headed to the studio, Alex reached out to John for some of his originals.
I’m Tired of These Little Games You’re Playing resonated with Alex and the rest of the guys in Rock Hearts and they were happy to be able to record such a traditional-sounding, yet original song.
