Don't Take It Too Bad is a perfect example of a song Rock Hearts enjoys harvesting from another genres to make into a bluegrass song. Certainly, Townes Van Zandt's songs have found a home in the bluegrass world as many of his songs including. If I Needed You, Pancho and Lefty, and White Freightliner Blues, have been covered by bluegrass bands including JD Crowe, The Seldom Scene, and Ricky Skaggs & Sharon White.  Alex MacLeod first heard the Townes Van Zandt Live at the Quarter Horse later in high school and had always appreciated this song.  He was excited that Rock Hearts would be open to "bluegrass-fying" this song for the project.
