Biography
Remedy Krewe is an American Southern Rock band formed in 2005 by vocalist/guitarist Dustan Chiasson. The six-piece band features Micah Boswell (drums, vocals), Jeremy Delle (bass), Chad Carlile (keys/harmonica), Lionel Batiste Jr. (Bass Drum) and Brad Walker (sax, vocals).
With a self-described “Southern Funk” style, the band carries on in the Southern Rock tradition established by the pioneering Allman Brothers and the legendary Black Crowes while fusing elements of New Orleans funk, blues and jam-band psychedelia performed over rhythmic, soulful grooves. The band’s distinctive southern sound reflects Chiasson’s Louisiana heritage – a sound Chiasson was inspired to develop and perform while living in London. Since moving to New Orleans in 2009, Remedy Krewe has built a steady following - due in part to its prolific touring as well as its reputation as a solid performance band.
Remedy Krewe’s 2013 album, Soul Shaker, puts the individual and collective talents of the band front and center. Produced by Grammy-nominated Jack Miele at Fudge Studios in New Orleans, Soul Shaker is a vibrant alchemy of American music with its roots firmly planted in Southern Rock, blues, funk and soul – yet underscored by a tight, technical complexity often associated with British Rock.
In the first cut, “Four Winds”, Chiasson belts out powerful and bluesy lyrics to funky but tight rhythms that include a blistering solo by tenor saxophonist, Brad Walker. The title track, “Soul Shaker”, starts like an uplifting New Orleans dance-hall standard. Then, in almost the same breath, the energy shifts to the tune of a soulful, psychotropic guitar jam, building momentum, then ultimately resuming full dance-hall throttle. “Drive” is a soulful southern rock track featuring Chad Carlile on keys. Carlile’s expressive Hammond B3 keyboard jam rounds out the edges to create a dance-able garage sound that’s at once bluesy, funky, rocking and laced with elements of gospel. “Sister Sorrow” is an impassioned acoustic rock ballad that remains soul-stirring without gushing awkward sentimentality. The track speaks to the band’s deft ability to shift moods from a funky-good time to inspired eloquence - slightly steamed up. “Shine” is a funky number that revs up the listener with soulful, driving rhythms made highly dance-able with Micah Boswell on percussion and Jeremy Delle on bass. The final cut, “Devil’s Smile”, is an infectious live track that demonstrates Remedy Krewe is more than a substantial studio band – but a preeminent performance band as well.
New Orleans’ Remedy Krewe is a band that tips its heartfelt hat to the tradition of Southern Rock while jamming classic American blues, funk and soul – carried out with a hint of British Rock influence. The result is a diverse and contagious audio gumbo that is uniquely traditional. The band’s mantra is “Keep it Funky!” and Remedy Krewe does more than walk the talk, they sing, swing and swagger.
