ABOUT THIS SONG
We learned this song when we were to play at a picking party where all the performing bands got the assignment to include a Reno & Smiley song in their set. We were new to the bluegrass scene and itching to show off speed and virtuosity (even if it made us play much sloppier than we cared to admit) and I wanted a vocal challenge as well. Not only is 320 BPM on the bass a killer workout, I found the perfect tongue-twister in "Barefoot Nellie," though in all honesty I'm not completely comfortable with the degree of "hillbilly yee-haw" in the lyrics. It's a historic document of what the majority of country music lovers in 1955 found funny. To all our listeners from the southern states of America, especially ladies with big feet: we mean no harm, and it is your right to come back at us with a song about the frugal and cheeseloving Dutch.
