Mama I Memphis
“Mama, I Miss Memphis”
by R.D. Olson
In this imaginative song, Elvis is in Heaven talking to his beloved mama, Gladys, about
his life and career. R.D. wrote three songs, plus a narrative, and cleverly intertwined them
into one. Each individual song represents Elvis’ musical progression starting with the
Blues, then Rockabilly movie tunes, and ending with grand stage productions. Elvis is
reminiscing about his career, recalling all the music legends he met while recording at
Sun Records, who are now also angels. The musicians are extraordinary, the guitar break
amazing, and Olson excels as he ends with a glorious crescendo, “His Love is shining
on!” This song is a masterpiece in every aspect. It’s a rare one, destined for top honors
for decades to come.
